played a prominent role in the 1956Hungarian revolution. The memorial plaque was placed on the housewhere Vasarhely was born in 1917.
RIJEKA, Oct 14 (Hina) - Hungarian Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany
visited the northern Croatian Adriatic city of Rijeka on Friday to unveil a
memorial plaque in honour of Miklos Vasarhely, a Hungarian historian and
politician who played a prominent role in the 1956 Hungarian revolution. The
memorial plaque was placed on the house where Vasarhely was born in 1917. The Hungarian prime minister was accompanied by Foreign Minister Ferenc
Somogy, Ambassador to Zagreb Laszlo Mohai, several prominent Hungarian
political and public figures, and a dozen reporters.
Before the unveiling ceremony, Gyurcsany met Rijeka Mayor Vojko
Obersnel. The mayor later told reporters that they discussed ways of
intensifying the use of Rijeka's harbour not just for Hungarian needs but also
for entire Central Europe.
