ZAGREB, Oct 6 (Hina) - The chairman of the national committee in charge of monitoring accession talks with the European Union, Ivica Racan, met Prime Minister Ivo Sanader on Thursday to discuss further cooperation regarding the membership talks.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Racan said that the so-called screening process, an in-depth analysis of the adjustment of Croatian legislation to that of the EU, begins next week, when Croatia will also define its position on talks on each negotiating chapter.

Racan announced a meeting of the national committee for next Wednesday, when the committee would discuss a draft resolution on talks with the EU. He added that Parliament might adopt the resolution already next week.

Asked if a platform for the talks had been agreed, Racan said: "First we have to see which chapters will come up for negotiation first. There will probably be seven chapters, two easier ones and five undoubtedly difficult ones that will require a lot of time and skill on the Croatian part."

He said that more information would be available after the committee's meeting next Wednesday.

Responding to a journalist's question, Racan said that science and research, education, agriculture and commodity procurement could be among the first chapters to be negotiated.

Racan said Croatia had to consider in due time starting positions it would defend. "We will have to ensure the effective work of the committee and I expect a lot of sessions," he added.

Racan stressed the need for good cooperation with Prime Minister Sanader. "We will have to demonstrate a new dimension that should not confuse either the media or the public."
