SARAJEVO, Oct 6 (Hina) - A former member of the Bosnian state
presidency, Ante Jelavic, indicted for the embezzlement of funds sent by
Croatia as aid to Croats in Bosnia-Herzegovina, was sentenced to ten years in
prison pending appeal by the State Court of Bosnia-Herzegovina on Thursday. Announcing the verdict, the president of the trial chamber, Malcolm
Simmons, said Jelavic would start serving his sentence immediately upon the
announcement of the verdict. The time he spent in prison from January 2004 to
May 2005 will be included in the sentence, Simmons said.
Prosecutor John McNair said he would immediately issue a warrant for
Jelavic's arrest since the accused did not appear in court to hear the
announcement of the verdict.
