BRUSSELS, Oct 1 (Hina) - The European Union is very likely to open membership talks with Croatia next week or some time later, according to a well-informed source from the Council of the European Union.

There is a 90 percent likelihood of talks with Turkey starting on Monday as planned, and Croatia could also be given the green light and start talks on Monday or over the next few weeks, the source told Hina in Brussels on Saturday.

The source further said that in case Croatia was given a positive assessment there was also the possibility of a separate declaration being adopted, in which Croatia would be told to maintain full cooperation with the Hague war crimes tribunal.

The EU Task Force for Croatia will meet before a regular meeting of the EU Council of Ministers in Luxembourg on Monday. Hague Tribunal Chief Prosecutor Carla del Ponte and Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader will be attending. The ministers' decision on Croatia will be based on a report by the Task Force.

The European Union adopted a negotiating framework for Croatia in March this year when it decided to delay the start of accession talks because of the country's failure to fully cooperate with the Hague tribunal.
