ZAGREB, Sept 8 (Hina) - The remaining 500 outdated kalashnikov guns were on Thursday destroyed in the Overhaul Department of the Croatian Armed Forces, within a UN-led programme for the prevention of proliferation of arms.

The destruction of the 500 guns was the second stage of the programme which is being carried out in Croatia. The first stage was carried out a month ago when another 500 kalashnikovs of various models and from various manufacturers were destroyed.

The project was launched at an initiative of the United Nations aimed at curbing the uncontrolled proliferation of arms. The German Heckler & Koch company, which is a manufacturer of high-performance small arms, is financing the UN project.

Within this programme, a total of 1,000 pieces of infantry arms have so far been destroyed, with an additional 600 pieces within a separate plan of the Croatian Defence Ministry.

The costs of the destruction are 15 to 20 euros per piece.

The Croatian ministry reported that the aim of the German manufacturer is to cover all countries in which it delivers its arms. So far, Croatia and Indonesia have started implementing the project and NATO member Estonia will soon join them.
