ZAGREB, Sept 6 (Hina) - Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader on Tuesday met Czech President Vaclav Klaus, who is currently on an official visit to Zagreb, the Government's Public Relations Office said in a statement.

The talks focused on Croatia's efforts to join the European Union and on strengthening economic cooperation between Croatia and the Czech Republic.

Klaus expressed his country's support for the opening of EU membership talks with Croatia as soon as possible, noting that the start of the talks should not be blocked by imposing conditions which Croatia could not meet.

Speaking of the future of their respective countries within the European Union, Sanader and Klaus highlighted the importance of economic cooperation between Croatia and the Czech Republic, citing tourism and transport via the northern Croatian Adriatic seaport of Rijeka, the statement said.

Klaus is visiting Croatia at the invitation of President Stjepan Mesic. On Tuesday, the first day of his visit, he met Mesic, Sanader and Zagreb Mayor Milan Bandic.

On Wednesday, the Czech president is scheduled to deliver a talk at a diplomatic forum on the subject "Europe after double 'no' to the European Constitution". He is also due to attend a Croatian-Czech business forum organised by the Croatian Chamber of the Economy.

On Thursday, Klaus will visit Dubrovnik.
