Mesic was speaking at a special session of the Municipal Council of Jelsa at which prominent local residents were presented with certificates of merit for their contribution to the development of the municipality. The session was held on the occasion of the municipality day, which is celebrated on the same day as the Assumption.
"There has been a number of development mistakes in Croatia, but we should draw lessons from them and move on. One of the biggest mistakes was made in privatisation, which calls for the adoption of legislation that will prevent the mismanagement of state property and its sale. Legislation should be adopted to prevent the sale of 'the family silver' and award concessions on state property instead, in order to attract investments and keep state property in our hands," Mesic said.
"The establishment of customs free zones offers great development possibilities, along with tourism as Croatia's main branch of economy. The fact that Croatia, thanks to its current policy which it will try to continue pursuing, is not in the focus of the greatest evil of today - global terrorism, will ensure success in that endeavour," Mesic said at the session which was also attended by Sabor vice-president Vesna Pusic and several parliamentary deputies.
