ZAGREB, July 31(Hina) - Two-thirds of Croatian citizens would not eatgenetically modified food under any conditions, according to a surveythe GfK centre for market research conducted on 1,000 people aged 15and over.
ZAGREB, July 31(Hina) - Two-thirds of Croatian citizens would not eat genetically modified food under any conditions, according to a survey the GfK centre for market research conducted on 1,000 people aged 15 and over.

Only 8.2 per cent of those polled said they would unreservedly eat genetically modified food, more than 16 per cent said they were not sufficiently informed about such food, while nearly 67 per cent said they would never eat it.

The survey showed that 92 per cent of those questioned had heard of genetically modified food, mostly from Zagreb in the 25-44 age group, with university degrees and an average household monthly income exceeding 8,500 kuna.

The majority of those who said they would eat genetically modified food were also from Zagreb, in the 15-34 age group and with secondary school education.

The majority of those against eating genetically modified food came from the Kordun, Banovina, Istria, Primorje and Gorski Kotar regions, aged 35-64, with higher education.

The least informed about genetically modified food were inhabitants of Slavonia and northern Croatia aged 65 and over with the lowest education. Persons older than 65 showed the lowest interest in this topic.

Asked if genetically modified products should be marked as such, 91 per cent of those asked said this was necessary, four per cent said it was not necessary, while five per cent did not know.

Fifty-nine per cent of Austrians and 51 per cent of the French are strongly against genetically modified food. Twenty-five per cent of Poles and 23 per cent of the British attach no importance to this topic, while 25 per cent of the Dutch and 20 per cent of the British are ready to eat genetically modified food.
