ZAGREB, July 22 (Hina) - Commenting on allegations about war crimes in Osijek in 1991, Croatian President Stjepan Mesic said on Friday "there is no Croatian interest out of which someone might kill any civilian or prisoner" and that "if someone did something like that, they should be brought to justice".

"There is information according to which police did their job, but then things came to a halt at some point and now it must be solved entirely. Primarily to prevent accusations against those who are not guilty and to bring to justice those who are guilty," Mesic told reporters.

Asked if at the time he had information about such events, Mesic said that there were messages from Osijek that unacceptable things were happening there, even to the effect that Croatia's legal system was not working in Osijek

"In my conflicts with a certain policy I was unable to do anything. Attempts were made to remove (Branimir) Glavas from Osijek. He was transferred to the army, but remained in Osijek," said Mesic, adding that an investigation would show whether Glavas or anyone else was guilty.

Commenting on the issue of compensation for war damage by Montenegro, Mesic reiterated that Croatia had filed a law suit and that the way of payment would be regulated though negotiations. He added it was important that Montenegro admitted that damage was done.

The Croatian President also told reporters that he would not attend this year's Sinjska Alka lancing tournament.

Mesic attended an event called "A Thousand Cranes from Croatia for Hiroshima" at Zagreb's Zrinjevac Park and expressed satisfaction that such an event was for the first time organised in Croatia, in memory of the people killed in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
