TIVAT, July 8 (Hina) - The Presidents of Croatia and Montenegro, Stjepan Mesic and Filip Vujanovic, met representatives of the Croatian minority in the Montenegrin coastal town of Tivat on Friday, promising them greater involvement of the authorities of both countries in preserving their national identity and improving the economic and political position of the Croatian community in Montenegro.

Mesic associated the issue of national minorities with the process of European integration, saying that it excluded motives for wars which had often been waged in the past on the pretext of minority protection when in fact their purpose was land grab.

"We want the Croats in Montenegro to preserve their national identity, because that enriches both Montenegro and Croatia," Mesic said.

Vujanovic expressed satisfaction with the position of the Montenegrin minority in Croatia and thanked Mesic for his contribution to the preservation of the Montenegrin national identity in Croatia.

Officials from the Croatian Civil Initiative (HGI), the first and for now the only political party representing the ethnic Croats in Montenegro, informed Mesic of their role in local government in Tivat and asked the Croatian government for assistance in opening a Croatian cultural centre in the town.

Mato Marovic, a member of the HGI and chairman of the Tivat town council, said that his party supported Montenegro's aspirations for independence.

The meeting also highlighted the need for Croatian companies to establish a presence in Montenegro and possibilities of cooperation in tourism.

With the meeting with representatives of the Croatian community, President Mesic concluded his official visit to Montenegro.
