KIEV, July 14 (Hina) - Croatian President Stjepan Mesic met his Ukrainian counterpart Viktor Yushchenko in Kiev on Thursday to discuss ways of enhancing bilateral cooperation and exchange views on current international affairs.

Speaking at a press conference after the talks, the two presidents said they were pleased that political dialogue had been initiated at the highest level after presidential elections and democratic changes in Ukraine.

Ukraine and Croatia have a large unused potential for enhancing trade and economic cooperation and should remove all the existing obstacles that prevent the arrival of business people on their respective markets, Yushchenko said.

In order to facilitate cooperation in all areas, the two presidents agreed that it was necessary to create conditions for lifting the visa requirements.

Both countries cited membership of the European Union and NATO as their strategic goal and expressed readiness to help each other on the way. They reaffirmed their commitment to pursuing a policy aimed at achieving EU membership.

Speaking of the fight against global terrorism, Mesic said that it was one of the most pressing tasks facing the international community and each country individually, and that the battle could be successful in the long term only if it was fought with a view to eliminating the deeper causes of terrorism.

Asked if they had discussed the Druzba Adria oil pipeline project, Mesic said that it was not the subject of the talks. He, however, reiterated that Croatia should not stay out of the European oil and gas pipeline network because that would spell out the collapse of the Croatian economy.

Mesic invited Yushchenko for an official visit to Croatia, which his host accepted with pleasure.

The Croatian president met at a working lunch with Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, with whom he talked about the efforts of the two countries to join the EU. On this occasion, the Ukrainian side expressed interest in the highway construction model used in Croatia.

During the two-day official visit, the Croatian delegation led by Mesic laid a wreath at the Monument to the Unknown Soldier.
