ZAGREB, July 11 (Hina) - The Delegation of the European Commission and the Croatian Competition Agency (known also as the Croatian acronym AZTN), on Monday presented an EUR800,000 project aimed at enhancing the Croatian system of allocating state subsidies, which is part of CARDS twinning programmes.

The funds from this project, which will be carried out in next 18 months, will be used primarily for strengthening the institutionalised capacity of the national Competition Agency.

The purpose of the project is to help Croatia to develop a system of the control of state subsidies and to help Croatian institutions which give support and recipients to raise their awareness about this topic.

On this occasion the first secretary of the Delegation of European Commission in Croatia, Oskar Benedikt, said the European Union paid particular attention on the just distribution of state subsidies,

The adjustment of the Croatian state support system to EU standards is part of efforts which Croatian has to make before entering the European bloc.

The senior partner and junior partners of Croatian institutions in this project are the German and Slovene finance ministries respectively.

The chairwoman of the Croatian Competition Agency said that with the signing of the Stabilisation and Association Agreement, Croatia had assumed the obligation not to give state subsidies which might undermine market competition or ruin trade relations between Croatia and the EU. As a consequence, the state subsidies law was amended for this purpose in April last year, Olga Spevec said.
