ZAGREB, June 25 (Hina) - Zagreb Archbishop Cardinal Josip Bozanic, who is the Primate in the Catholic Church in Croatia, on Saturday said Mass in St Mark's Church in Zagreb on the occasion of Statehood Day.

Present at the service were Croatian President Stjepan Mesic, Sabor Speaker Vladimir Seks, Prime Minister Ivo Sanader and other senior officials.

During his sermon, Cardinal Bozanic said that today Croatians prayed and thanked God for their homeland, all of its citizens, notably for those who are in power and who he said have particular responsibility for the state.

"We want our homeland to be a country of peace, solidarity, justice, mutual respect and a safe home for all living in it. We are happy to see every progress it makes and every step towards a safer and more successful future," the dignitary stressed saying prayers for the Zagreb-Split highway which will be opened to traffic on Sunday.

He also commented on the importance of politicians in performing their duties.

"There is no good policy without good life and fair acts," Bozanic said adding that coexistence among people can be expected only where there good deeds are done and recognised.

The service ended with the performance of the national anthem.
