JASENOVAC, June 22 (Hina) - Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader opened in Jasenovac on Wednesday a new bridge across the Sava connecting Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina.

The 240 m steel bridge was built where the previous bridge, destroyed in the 1990s war, used to be. The EUR4 million bridge was built by Croatian workers in 18 months. Construction was financed by the Croatian government and the European Commission on Bosnia's behalf.

Inaugurating the bridge, Sanader said the future of Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina was in the European Union. He said he believed the current crisis in the Union was only temporary and called for building a joint European future.

"We in Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina will show... that cooperation between our countries is the foundation of peace and prosperity in Central and Southeast Europe," said Sanader.

Croatian Transport and Development Minister Bozidar Kalmeta said the completion of the Jasenovac bridge marked the end of construction of 11 bridges between Croatia and Bosnia which were destroyed in the 1990s war. He added the two countries were once again connected by roads and railways important for stability and economic development.

European Commission chief in Bosnia Michael B. Humphreys said the new bridge was a symbol of regional cooperation and a good example of what the two countries could do with the EU's assistance.

He said good cooperation with neighbours and mutual assistance among the region's countries was significant for joining the EU.

Bosnian Deputy Prime Minister Barisa Colak voiced hope the new bridge would be conducive to cooperation between the two countries.

Jasenovac municipal head Marija Mackovic said the inauguration of the bridge would help the economic revival of the municipality 100 km southeast of Zagreb which is on the government's list of special interest areas.
