SPLIT, June 21 (Hina) - Zvonimir Puljic of the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) was elected mayor of the southern coastal city of Split on Tuesday.

Puljic, the only mayoral candidate, received six votes from the HDZ, four from an entrepreneurs' slate, one from the Party of Rights (HSP) and two from the Pensioners' Party (HSU).

The two HSU votes caused a stormy debate because the party won seats in the City Council as part of a pre-election coalition with the Social Democrats (SDP), the People's Party (HNS) and the Peasant Party (HSS).

Councillors of these three parties were not present when Puljic was elected. They did attend the founding assembly of the City Council, but walked out when they saw how the HSU councillors were voting for the mayor's post.
