RIJEKA, June 17 (Hina) - An MP and senior official of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Slavko Linic, said on Friday that the Elections Act should be changed because it enabled parties to form post-election coalitions "overnight", describing decisions by members of some parties to support other parties as politically immoral.

Linic and the head of the SDP branch in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, Zlatko Komadina, held a news conference in Rijeka on the ongoing establishment of local government units.

Linic said that voters had voted for parties and not individuals and that the current model of establishment of local governments was discouraging voters from taking part in elections.

He said his party would organise a convention later this month which would focus on local elections and propose changes to the Elections Act.

Linic believes that changes to the Elections Act should make it possible to know for sure immediately after elections which party has won, and enable the party or coalition with a relative majority to establish local government units on its own.

Linic believes that the direct election of leaders of local and regional self-government bodies would encourage citizens to go to the polls, and that the new law would reduce post-election party defections to the minimum.

Komadina said that all independent lists supported the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) and vice versa after the May 15 local elections.

He added that various methods were used to ensure the support, from bribery to pressure.
