BRIJUNI, June 19 (Hina) - Croatian President Stjepan Mesic hosted the traditional annual reception for members of the diplomatic corps on the northern Adriatic archipelago of Brijuni on Saturday evening.

"The meetings in Brijuni are a good custom and a unique opportunity to recall the political initiatives that changed the global political scene in the midst of the Cold War in the second half of the 20th century," Mesic said in his address to the diplomatic corps.

He went on to say that Croatia today was trying to give its contribution to "the struggle for peace, stability and security in the world, both with its regional and global policies".

He added that Croatia was not distancing itself from its neighbours but wanted to build with them new relations and a new image of Southeast Europe.

Speaking about the country's aspirations to join the EU, Mesic said that Croatia was already ready for EU membership according to many criteria.

Croatia should not be punished for what was done in its name and under the guise of patriotism in the past, he said.

The head of the diplomatic corps, Papal Nuncio Francisco Javier Lozano, thanked President Mesic for the reception, adding that the diplomatic corps was monitoring Croatia's democratic and political development. He conveyed the wishes of the diplomatic corps for Croatia's prosperity and success in international relations.

The meeting in Brijuni was attended by 28 representatives of embassies and missions in Croatia.

Present at the meeting at President Mesic's side was Foreign Affairs and European Integration Minister Kolinda Grabar Kitarovic and Pula Mayor Valter Drandic.
