ZAGREB, May 18 (Hina) - Croatian President Stjepan Mesic on Wednesday received a delegation of the National Democratic Institute (NDI) and representatives of eight Iraqi parties and nongovernmental organisations who observed Sunday's local elections in Croatia, the President's Office said in a statement.

The NDI is a nonprofit organisation aimed at advancing and spreading democracy world wide, based on the tradition of the US Democratic Party. Former US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright was NDI president.

Mesic informed his Iraqi guests that after several rounds of elections Croatia had reached European standards and stressed that parties in Croatia completed an important development path, the statement said.

Mesic also informed his guests of Croatia's position regarding the solving of the Iraqi crisis. He said Croatia was not militarily active in Iraq because the operation was not conducted under the auspices of the UN. He added that Croatia was active in assistance in the stabilisation of that country.

The coordinator of the NDI study mission, Bradley Pye, praised cooperation with the Croatian authorities and parties involved in the organisation of this trip. He said their main objective was realised because the Iraqi guests had an opportunity to gain new experience.
