WASHINGTON, June 15 (Hina) - US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said on Wednesday the United States strongly supported the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and encouraged the Hague-based court to continue its work in order to bring those responsible for war crimes to justice.

Rice met in Washington with ICTY Chief Prosecutor Carla del Ponte and ICTY President Theodor Meron, as well as a prosecutor from the Rwanda Tribunal.

The Secretary of State reiterated our strong support for their work, stressed that we would continue supporting their work and called on them to continue working according to their schedules, State Department spokesman Sean McCormack told reporters.

Rice pointed out that it was important for those responsible for war crimes to face justice in a public forum as part of the process of dealing with antagonisms and tensions that existed in the two two areas, the spokesman said.

McCormack said that the talks also focused on the three most wanted indictees who are still at large.

The ICTY insists that Bosnian Serb wartime leaders Radovan Karadzic and Ratko Mladic and Croatian general Ante Gotovina be located, arrested and transferred to The Hague.
