METLIKA, June 15 (Hina) - The Ministers of the Interior of Slovenia and Croatia, Dragutin Mate and Marijan Mlinaric, met in the Slovene town of Metlika on Wednesday to discuss cooperation in police and customs affairs during the tourist season and ways of avoiding border incidents.

Speaking at a press conference after the meeting, Mlinaric said that the meeting was "very successful" and that the two sides would cooperate in preventing traffic hold-ups at border crossings by rerouting passenger and cargo traffic to other crossings.

The Croatian minister said that it was also agreed that joint police patrols, which have been operational for several years, would be used to prevent or handle incidents at the border.

"If a joint patrol goes out to solve a situation, it is no longer an incident, but an effort to establish facts," Mlinaric said, adding that it was in the interests of both Croatia and Slovenia to behave according to European standards and prevent incidents.

Describing the meeting as "very fruitful", Mate said he informed his guest of changes to European regulations, as a result of which Croatian citizens now have their passports stamped by Slovene border police, adding that it could be arranged for Croats living in border areas and working in Slovenia to be allowed to use their ID when crossing the border.

Asked if the agreement on the prevention of border incidents by sending joint patrols could also be used in the Bay of Piran, Mate said that that would be hard, but that Slovenia had today proposed certain solutions that would have to be decided by the ministries of foreign affairs and the governments of the two countries.
