Education minister says Croatia made big step forward in Bologna process

ZAGREB, May 19 (Hina) - Croatian Science, Education and Sports MinisterDragan Primorac, who will later on Thursday submit a report on theimplementation of the Bologna process in Croatia at a ministerialconference of the countries signatories to the Bologna Declarationheld in Bergen, Norway, said that over the past year, Croatia made "asurprisingly big step forward into that direction".
ZAGREB, May 19 (Hina) - Croatian Science, Education and Sports Minister Dragan Primorac, who will later on Thursday submit a report on the implementation of the Bologna process in Croatia at a ministerial conference of the countries signatories to the Bologna Declaration held in Bergen, Norway, said that over the past year, Croatia made "a surprisingly big step forward into that direction".

Ahead of the ministerial conference, Minister Primorac told Hina that Dutch Minister of Education, Culture and Science Marlis Leegwater also shared his standpoint that Croatia made progress in the implementation of principles of the Bologna process -- the greatest reform of the university education in Europe after WWII. The Dutch minister will also take part in the conference.

Many experts agree that usually three years are necessary to make progress that Croatia made in just one year, Primorac said. Given that the new university curriculum, which is in line with the Bologna declaration, will be in force as of this autumn, Minister Primorac said he expected Croatia implement the Bologna process even speedier than EU member countries would.

This is the third ministerial conference of the countries signatories to the Bologna declaration which Croatia signed on 18 May 2001 at a ministerial conference in Prague.

The Bologna declaration is a joint document which 29 European ministers signed on 19 June 1999 so as to transform the university education in Europe into an education system with recognisable and comparable academic degrees by 2010.

So far, the declaration ha been signed by 40 European countries,
