ZAGREB, June 1 (Hina) - Negotiating teams of the government and the Croatian Pensioners Party (HSU) on Wednesday resumed negotiations after a longer break, and made small headway with regard to the adoption of a law on a fund from which retirees would be compensated for pensions that the state owes them.

"We have agreed with Deputy Prime Minister Damir Polancec that 5 August is the deadline for the adoption of a law on a pensioners fund, and for the calculation of individual debts to be paid back to every retiree," HSU representative Silvano Hrelja told Hina after the meeting with Polancec.

"We have agreed that the first installment of the debt should be paid back until the end of the term of the current government, namely until 30 September 2007," he added.

Several issues remain to be discussed next Friday, when negotiations will continue, Hrelja said.

The HSU is expected to take a position on the Ivo Sanader cabinet's proposal that the debt to pensioners be paid within eight years, with a two-year moratorium and six annual payments, with the completion of the process in 2013.

Hrelja said that before making any decision, the HSU would consult other pensioners associations.
