TROGIR, May 19 (Hina) - The Town Council of Trogir in southern Croatia on Thursday presented Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos with a charter declaring him an honorary citizen for his long-lasting promotion of Croatia and his strong support for the country's efforts to join the EU as soon as possible.

The Spanish foreign minister was accompanied by Croatian Foreign Minister Kolinda Grabar Kitarovic and former foreign minister Miomir Zuzul.

Moratinos, who visited Trogir for the first time in the early 1970's and has been visiting it since, was awarded the charter at a session of the Trogir Town Council on November 12 last year, on the occasion of Trogir Day, Mayor Vedran Rozic said.

Rozic said that Moratinos's diplomatic activities had significantly contributed to Croatia's obtaining EU candidate status.

Expressing his gratitude the award, Moratinos said he felt great friendship towards Croatia, where he said he had become familiar with the real Mediterranean spirit although he was from a Mediterranean country himself.

He said he believed that Croatia and Trogir would soon celebrate membership in the European family.

Mayor Rozic presented the Spanish official with a statuette of the town's patron saint, St. John, inviting him to attend celebrations of the town's day every year.

Moratinos presented Rozic, a former player of Hajduk Split soccer club, with a jersey of Madrid's soccer club Atletico.
