Senator Voinovich expressed interest in the current state of of affairs in the region and possibilities for overcoming the problems which are the legacy of the recent wars.
Mesic informed his guest of the priorities of the Croatian government on the foreign political front, Croatia's standpoint about hot spots in the world, including Iraq and efforts the government was making to establish the law-based state, realise full cooperation with the UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague and create conditions for the safe return of refugees, the statement said.
Speaking about the US-Croatia relations, Voinovich highlighted the issue of the non-extradition of US citizens to the International Criminal Court.
Mesic said the Croatian public would have a hard time accepting the fact that citizens of another country were exempt from the jurisdiction of an international court while Croatian citizens were being extradited, underlining that he fully supported Croatia's cooperation with the Hague tribunal, the statement said.
