CAIRO, April 24 (Hina) - Egyptian Prime Minister Ahmad Muhammad Nazif and Croatian President Stjepan Mesic, who arrived in Cairo on Saturday evening, held talks on bilateral relations, the situation in the Middle East and Iraq.

Mesic arrived in Egypt to lay wreaths at the site of a World War Two refugee camp called El Shatt on Sunday.

The Egyptian premier and the Croatian head of state agreed that relations between their countries were good and confirmed that there was interest in strengthening economic cooperation particularly in the tourist sector.

With regard to the matter of the Middle East, Mesic said that Egypt was a key country in the region, and reiterated what he said during his recent visit to Israel and the Palestinian Authority, namely that "the conflict can and must be solved only by negotiations".

The Egyptian premier agreed that the situation now required negotiations during which both sides would show readiness to make concessions.

The position of Croatia and Egypt on the issue of Iraq is that everything necessary should be done so as to preserve the unity of the country.

PM Nazif said he hoped that the Iraqi people would soon be convinced that the destiny of their country was in their own hands
