"If we can help those forces to win, it is worth trying to maintain bilateral relations and continue ensuring the stability of the entire region," the premier told deputies during Question Time.
Responding to a question by Anto Djapic of the Party of Rights (HSP), Sanader said that his cabinet had sent a protest note to the United States over the presentation of a Medal of Merit to the daughter of the late Chetnik leader Draza Mihailovic. The prime minister added that he had personally called the US Ambassador in Zagreb for talks and handed him a protest note, and that the Croatian Ambassador to Washington had also protested against the presentation of the medal.
Sanader proposed that the Sabor adopt a declaration condemning the Chetnik Movement, crimes its members committed in Croatia and their collaboration with Fascism and Nazism.
"It is none of our business what people in Serbia think, but we must take our own position and say that the Chetnik Movement was the same as Nazism and Fascism and that it committed horrendous crimes," Sanader said.
