ZAGREB, May 15 (Hina) - Workers of the meat-processing company
"Sljeme", who have been picketing the government's headquarters in Zagreb's St.
Mark's Square for 18 days, asking for overdue salaries and insisting that the
Croatian Privatisation Fund (HFP) take shares in the company again, on Sunday
organised yet another protest rally with members of the Trade Union of Workers
in the Agricultural and Food-Processing Sector, other unionists and many
citizens. On 28 April, about 300 disgruntled "Sljeme" workers began
demonstrations, accusing the current owner "Finagra", a company which holds 73
percent of "Sljeme" shares, of planning to cease production and close the
company after it bought shares from the HFP. The protestors also insist on
being granted proper severance pays in a sensible period of time.
Today the protest rally gathered over 500 people, including the leaders
of two federations of trade unions.
