PORTOROZ, May 14 (Hina) - Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader took part in Portoroz on Saturday in the eighth congress of his Slovene counterpart Janez Jansa's Democratic Party, which won last autumn's parliamentary elections.

Sanader headed a delegation of his Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), the ruling party in Croatia, which also included HDZ Main Committee chairman Bozo Biskupic and Deputy Parliament Speaker Bozo Biskupic.

In his address, Sanader said the HDZ and the Slovene Democratic Party were sister parties and that the latter had become the strongest political force in Slovenia thanks to serious work and a serious policy.

Sanader said that he and PM Jansa had been friends for many years and that in their incumbent capacity, this enabled them to cooperate for the benefit of both countries.

Sanader said the Croats and the Slovenes had cooperated and been friends for centuries, for which he received a round of applause.

The Croatian PM also said the two countries had more things in common than the few existing outstanding issues, and that the two peoples had been the closest also in communist Yugoslavia.

"We will share a common future in the EU and NATO, just as we were close in the past," said Sanader.

He congratulated Slovenia on accomplishing two historic goals -- admission to the European Union and NATO. "This is the path Croatia wants to take as well."

Sanader said Croatia was aware of the support and friendship Slovenia showed also by advocating that Croatia's EU entry negotiations be opened as soon as possible.

Speaking of relations between the two countries and integration, he said he had always stated that determination to integrate always paid off and that there was no alternative to European integration.
