Vojvodina Croats warn against promotion of Bunjevci as separate ethnic community

SUBOTICA, Feb 16 (Hina) - Representatives of the Croat minority in Serbia on Wednesday sent open letters to Croatian and Serbian Presidents, Ivo Josipovic and Boris Tadic, and other top officials calling on them to help put an end to "the denationalisation of a part of the Croat national minority in Vojvodina" and the efforts to make "an artificial difference" between Bunjevci Croats and the rest of the Croat community in Serbia.

They urged the two countries' presidents to take the necessary measures to protect the integrity of the Croat community in the northern Serbian province of Vojvodina and to see to it that Serbian institutions stop supporting "quasi-scientific and politically anachronistic and anti-civilsational endeavours" to make an artificial division among the Croat community in the region of northern Backa with the aim of facilitating the assimilation of Vojvodina Croats.

Some 40 signatories warned that people who identify themselves as Bunjevci are given a lot of space in the media for their promotion and facilities for their activities, and are allowed to falsify voter registers. At the same time, Croats in Vojvodina are deprived of such support, according to the letter.
