SDSS chief says Serbia won't put Purda on trial if his extorted statement is only evidence

VINKOVCI, Feb 10 (Hina) - Independent Democratic Serb Party (SDSS) President Vojislav Stanimirovic has said that Serbia will probably not put Tihomir Purda on trial if it is established that there is no other evidence but the statement extorted under torture.

Stanimirovic told the Osijek Television on Wednesday evening that during a meeting of Serbia's leadership with Serbs living outside Serbia on Tuesday, Serbian President Boris Tadic also discussed the issue of Tihomir Purda, a Croatian war veteran who was arrested in Bosnia and Herzegovina on 5 January on a warrant issued by Belgrade where he was wanted for alleged war crimes.

Concerning the Purda case, President Tadic said that Serbia would not deal with that case if there was no other evidence but a statement the suspect gave in prison, the Croat Serb leader said.

Purda and his defence team say that evidence against him had been collected unlawfully, as his statement had been extorted under torture in a concentration camp in Serbia.
