ZAGREB, April 30 (Hina) - Ivan Psenica was elected new president of the alliance of families of Croatian soldiers detained or gone missing in the 1990s war of independence at the alliance's fifth election assembly in Zagreb on Saturday.

Submitting an annual report, former president Josip Jugec said exhumations virtually reached a standstill in 2004 due to lack of information, and that economic problems and the EU integration process had pushed Croatia's biggest humanitarian issue into the background.

Jugec said the alliance continued to demand that exhumations and collecting of information be intensified.

New president Psenica said war veterans should have a separate ministry and not be part of the Ministry of War Veterans, Family Affairs and Inter-generational Solidarity.

Minister Jadranka Kosor pledged the government would do everything to accelerate identifications, exhumations and collecting of data on detained and missing soldiers and civilians.

Kosor said Croatia was still looking for 1,159 missing or detained persons and that since 1991 it had looked for more than 18,000.

She said information on mass grave sites was crucial for exhumations and that this continued to be a priority in talks with representatives of Serbia and Montenegro.

To date 140 mass grave locations have been discovered in Croatia, the biggest of which were the New Cemetery in Vukovar, which contained 938 bodies, and Ovcara, with 200 bodies, both in eastern Croatia.
