ZAGREB, April 18 (Hina) - Croatian President Stjepan Mesic will lay a wreath at the restored Croatian cemetery at the site of the World War Two El Shatt refugee camp in Egypt on April 24, the President's Office announced on Monday.

More than 800 Croatian refugees, who were evacuated to Egypt mainly from Dalmatia during World War Two, were buried at the cemetery.

The Croatian cemetery was restored following a decision reached by the government in February 2003. Eleven memorial plaques bear the names of 825 people from Croatia who died during their exile in Egypt.

After the capitulation of Italy, more than 33,000 refugees were evacuated from Dalmatia via the island of Vis to Italy from where allied forces transferred 25,000 Croats to Egypt to save them from starvation.

Croatian refugees lived in tents in five separate camps by the Red Sea.
