NEW YORK, April 20 (Hina) - Croatian Finance Minister Ivan Suker on Tuesday visited the United Nations, where he discussed the reform of the world body and its Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), and the strengthening of the role of developing and transition countries in international financial institutions.

Suker met ECOSOC president Munir Akram and Jose Antonio Ocampo, UN undersecretary for economic and social issues.

Suker and Akram talked about Monday's meeting between representatives of ECOSOC and the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, and the World Trade Organisation, who discussed ways of achieving the goals of the UN Millennium Declaration.

Akram said after meeting Suker that developing countries said at Monday's meeting that their role should be heard more in international financial institutions, the Croatian Mission to the UN said in a press release.

Suker said Croatia considered ECOSOC an important instrument in the coordination of international institutions in the conception of the global development policy.

The minister also said Croatia was committed to achieving the Millennium Declaration goals and that it supported the reform of the UN, notably the strengthening of ECOSOC's role in peace-building and management of post-conflict situations.

During talks with Ocampo, Suker said Croatia supported the reform of the UN Secretariat.
