PRAGUE, April 18 (Hina) - Croatian Parliament Speaker Vladimir Seks met the Speaker of the House of Representative of the Czech Parliament, Lubomir Zaoralek, in Prague on Monday for talks on Croatia's efforts to join the European Union and its cooperation with the Hague war crimes tribunal.

Before being admitted to the European Union, Croatia must resolve the issue of cooperation with the Hague tribunal. All countries intending to join the bloc have the same tasks they must fulfil, Zaoralek told reporters.

Zaoralek said that Croatia had to prove that it was a credible partner, because some EU members doubted the credibility of the evidence Croatia had presented so far.

Besides, Croatia is playing a stimulating role in Southeast Europe and should serve as a model to the countries in the region, he added.

Asked about the position of the Czech Republic on Croatia's EU membership in the light of the fact that it had withheld its support before March 17, Zaoralek said that Czech support depended on a report by the task force evaluating the Croatian government's cooperation with the Hague tribunal.

I hope the outcome will be positive this time, Zaoralek said.

Seks said he had informed his host and members of the Czech Parliament about what Croatia was expecting from the report of the task force, adding that the task of this group and the tribunal's chief prosecutor was to evaluate Croatia's credibility in its cooperation with the tribunal.

The talks also focused on Croatia's policy towards its neighbours in the region and the importance of parliamentary diplomacy between Croatia and the Czech Republic.

Seks invited Zaoralek for a return visit to Croatia.

Seks also met the Chairman of the Committee on European Affairs, Pavel Svoboda, who said that the Committee was fully agreed that the European Union should open membership talks with Croatia as soon as possible.

Seks arrived in Prague on Monday for his first, two-day official visit. On Tuesday, he is scheduled to meet Czech President Vaclav Klaus, Prime Minister Stanislav Gross and Foreign Minister Cyril Svoboda.
