BERLIN, April 12 (Hina) - Deputies of the German CDU/CSU Union in
the European Parliament insist on the postponement of Bulgaria and Romania's
entry into the European Union, set for 2007, and that these two countries
should join the European bloc together with Croatia in 2009, the
secretary-general of the CDU/CSU club of deputies in the Euro-parliament,
Werner Langen, said on Tuesday. According to a press release issued
on the club's web site, Langen, who is a member of the Christian Democratic
Union (CDU), believes that Romania in particular has demonstrated "significant
deficits" regarding its fulfillment of the Copenhagen criteria. Besides, it
will be politically wise, he added, to leave some more time for Romania and
Bulgaria to reach the required standards, which is why they can enter the EU
together with Croatia at the start of 2009.
Langen stressed that the CDU/CSU Union had nothing against the
admission of Romania, Bulgaria and Croatia to the European Union, saying that
in this process no concessions should be made with regard to European
criteria.
