ZAGREB, April 11 (Hina) - Croatia's President Stjepan Mesic on Monday received Bosnia-Herzegovina's ambassador Zlatko Dizdarevic in a farewell visit, and thanked him for his contribution to the development of bilateral relations. On this occasion Mesic bestowed a high medal, namely the Order of Prince Branimir with the collar, on the outgoing ambassador.

"Good relations between our countries are a cornerstone of peace and stability in south-eastern Europe," Mesic said.

Ambassador Dizdarevic said that "now when Croatia is to enter the process of its admission into European Union bilateral relations are considerably different and more developed as well as more and more defined by co-ordinates of European integration and less and less by traumas from the past, despite some occasional normal oscillations".

Mesic said that in the relations between the two countries, Croats in Bosnia-Herzegovina were an unavoidable element.

"They are not a minority, they are one of three constituent peoples and must enjoy all rights stemming from that characteristic," the president said adding that Zagreb had to help Bosnian Croats.

"We, however, cannot and must not interfere in any way in the internal things of the other country," the Croatian president said.

He added that with the departure of Dizdarevic, the post of Bosnian Ambassador to Zagreb would remain vacant, and expressed hope that Bosnia would soon appoint Dizdarevic's successor who would be welcome.

Asked by reporters about this topic at the end of his meeting with Mesic, Dizdarevic only answered that he hoped that the charge d'affaires would replace the ambassador no longer than usual in light of the fact that Bosnia and Croatia had good relations as the closest and best neighbours.

I think that Bosnia should act as soon as possible. I hope that both sides are in favour of reaching agreement on a new ambassador as soon as possible, the diplomat said.

According to Bosnian media, Sarajevo appointed Branko Kesic as Dizdarevic's successor. However, Zagreb did not greenlight his appointment within the usual span of time for that procedure, which has been interpreted as a sign that Croatia did not want Kesic at that post because of his alleged role in the eviction of Croats from their flats in Banja Luka in 1990s when he was a local Bosnian Serb official in that northwestern city. Therefore, Sarajevo is now expected to appoint a new candidate for this ambassadorial post.
