The service was also conducted by the apostolic nuncio to Croatia, Msgr. Francisco Javier Lozano, and auxiliary Zagreb bishops Josip Mrzljak and Valentin Pozaic.
After the wake, which included prayer, the reading of the Bible and parts of the Pope's encyclicals, Cardinal Bozanic led a procession to the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the square in front of the cathedral, where thousands of candles had been lit during the day and evening.
The wake ended with the cardinal placing an Easter candle in front of a photo of the Pope and invoking a blessing on those present.
Nuncio Lozano said prayers would be held at the nunciature building in Zagreb's residential area of Ksaver in the morning and afternoon on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
Government and parliament officials also attended last night's wake.
