ZAGREB, April 3 (Hina) - The head of the co-ordinating body of Jewish municipalities in Croatia, Ognjen Kraus, and the chief rabbi in Croatia, Kotel Da-Don, on Sunday sent messages to Cardinal Josip Bozanic and Catholic believers in Croatia and the world, extending condolences on the death of Pope John Paul II. Kraus and Da-Don said the Jewish people would remember the deceased pope as a person who bravely stood against the historical injustice inflicted on the Jews.

He officially and publicly removed the old prejudice and accusations levelled against the Jews and Judaism, and his act was very well accepted by churches and Christian believers, the message reads.

Pope John Paul II had a unique gift and wisdom to understand the history.

He called for peace and love among people wherever he travelled, the Jewish representatives wrote in the message.

They praised the Holy Father for encouraging a deep and fruitful dialogue between Christianity and Judaism, between the State of Israel and the Vatican, and for developing their diplomatic relations.

He was the first pope to visit Israel.

Kraus and Da-Don added that the pope's visit to the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem and to Yad Vashem would be remembered for ever. They recalled that on that occasion Pope Karol Wojtyla said that "we feel a deep pain because of the conduct of Christians who inflicted suffering on the Jews in the past".

They also recalled that Wojtyla was the first pontiff to visit a synagogue and the first to invite the chief Israeli rabbi to hold talks on growing anti-Semitism in the world.

They also praised the pope for his friendship towards the Jewish people and added that there were testimonies of his rescuing Jews during the Holocaust in the Second World War.

All of this makes him a great and true spiritual leader, Kraus and Da-Don wrote.
