POREC, March 30 (Hina) - Croatian President Stjepan Mesic has said he does not believe that the runaway general Ante Gotovina will surrender to the Hague war crimes tribunal because "he could have demonstrated his patriotism long ago, if he had wanted".

Speaking to reporters in the northern Adriatic resort of Porec on Wednesday, Mesic said he was confident that Gotovina's advisors and attorneys would continue to look for political and other points.

Commenting on the appearance of posters with Gotovina's image throughout the country, Mesic said he considered this to be a well organised and financed campaign.

He added that Cardinal Josip Bozanic himself had stated in his Easter address that no issue, including that of General Gotovina, could be solved in such a way.

Asked about the replacement of Bosnian Presidency member Dragan Covic, Mesic said he had no right to comment on what was going on in neighbouring countries, particularly when it came to the judiciary or the most senior state officials.

He briefly said that Covic was allowed to engage in political activities on the assumption of his innocence, although, he added, it would be very difficult to perform duties of a Presidency member until the court established all facts.

Covic has advocated the integrity and preservation of Bosnia-Herzegovina and the functioning of state institutions and he will be recognised in that sense, Mesic said.
