ZAGREB/THE HAGUE, March 24 (Hina) - The Prosecution of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in The Hague has announced its intention to join the indictment against Croatian generals Ivan Cermak and Mladen Markac with one against Ante Gotovina.

"The Prosecutor anticipates a motion for joinder and filing a single amended indictment naming the accused Cermak, Markac and Gotovina in the same indictment," the Prosecution announced in a motion for an extension of time to amend the Markac and Cermak indictment, which was made public on Thursday.

The Prosecution further said that the joinder would be in the best interest of judicial economy, the efficient handling of the two related cases and in line with the tribunal's exit strategy.

On March 8, the Trial Chamber gave the Prosecution 21 days to amend the Cermak and Markac indictment. The Prosecution now requested that the deadline, which expires on March 29, be extended for 45 days.

General Gotovina has been on the run ever since the indictment against him was released in June 2001. The indictment against Generals Cermak and Markac was unsealed in March 2004, after which the two turned themselves in. Both were provisionally released last December.

All three generals are charged with war crimes committed against Serbs during and after the Croatian military and police operation Storm that crushed the Serb rebellion in Croatia in the summer of 1995.
