RAMALLAH, March 17 (Hina) - Croatian President Stjepan Mesic held an hour-long meeting with Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Korei in Ramallah, the West Bank, on Thursday.

After the meeting, Mesic said that the Palestinians and the Israelis would achieve happiness and contentment when walls no longer divided them. In this context the Croatian president urged the two sides to commit themselves to negotiations.

This was Mesic's first visit to the Palestinian territory and his first meeting with the top Palestinian official after he had met Yasser Arafat in Davos, Switzerland, in 2001.

Mesic and Karzai discussed bilateral relations, the situation in the Middle East, and the controversial Israeli security barriers towards Palestinian areas.

Mesic said he believed that peace in the Middle East could be achieved only through dialogue. The Palestinians have the right to their land and Israel's rights are a reality, he said adding that the conflict could be solved only at a negotiating table.

Palestinian reporters asked Mesic to comment on yesterday's decision by Brussels to delay membership talks with Croatia.

Mesic explained that out of 626 requirements from the Hague-based UN war crimes tribunal, Zagreb had met 625, and that Croatia would prove to European countries and the tribunal that the fugitive general Ante Gotovina was not in Croatia.

Mesic arrived in Ramallah from Jerusalem and had to pass through an Israeli army checkpoint. He was escorted to Palestinian Ministerial Council headquarters amidst tightened security.

PM Korei welcomed Mesic in his offices.

On Thursday morning, Mesic wrapped up his two-day visit to Israel during which he met top Israeli officials, including President Moshe Katsav, and attended the ceremony of inauguration of the New Museum of the Holocaust in Yad Vashem Memorial Centre.
