ZAGREB, March 16 (Hina) - Representatives of the Croatian Chamber
of the Economy (HGK) and the Croatian Employers' Association (HUP) said on
Wednesday that the postponement of Croatia's accession negotiations with the
European Union would not have any significant negative consequences for the
country's economy over a short period of time. HUP Director-General
Djuro Popijac said there would be no negative consequences in the short period,
but the effects might be dramatic in case of a long postponement.
He added that the delay should not be taken dramatically and that a
period until the opening of the talks should be used for the intensified
adjustment of Croatia's laws to EU standards.
HGK President Nadan Vidosevic said Croatia was a very open country with
a great share of foreign capital in the economy, notably in high-growth
sectors, which he said was an additional guarantee that there would be no
tremors in the forthcoming period.
