The agreement was signed in the White House by Croatian Culture Minister Bozo Biskupic and the head of the US commission for the preservation of the American cultural heritage abroad, Warren Miller.
After the signing, Miller said that the two previous Croatian government had distanced themselves from the policy of the former Croatian President, Franjo Tudjman, including his defensive stand towards the Ustasha regime. He said that over the past four years Croatia took measures which show its readiness to deal with the painful past.
He hailed President Stjepan Mesic's apology in the Israeli parliament for crimes against Croatian Jews during World War II. Miller added that the Croatian government must be praised for the attention it is attaching to the needs of the Jewish community in Croatia.
He also hailed the apologies by President Mesic and his counterpart from Serbia and Montenegro Svetozar Marovic for "all evils" committed during the 1991-1995 war.
