ZAGREB, Jan 31 (Hina) - The State Electoral Commission on Mondayreleased the final results of the presidential election, according towhich Stjepan Mesic, the candidate of eight opposition parties,defeated the candidate of the ruling
Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ),Jadranka Kosor, in an election runoff on January 16.
ZAGREB, Jan 31 (Hina) - The State Electoral Commission on Monday
released the final results of the presidential election, according to which
Stjepan Mesic, the candidate of eight opposition parties, defeated the
candidate of the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), Jadranka Kosor, in an
election runoff on January 16.The results were released after voting had been repeated at two polling
stations on January 23 and after all deadlines for complaints had expired.
The Commission said that 2,241,760 out of 4,392,220 registered voters
had cast their ballots, and that 35,617 ballots were declared invalid.
Mesic won 1,454,451 or 65.93 per cent of the votes and Kosor 751,692
votes or 34.07 per cent.
The Commission said that the presidential election were held in
accordance with election standards in democratic countries.
