After a tour of the site, the head of the Jasenovac Memorial Area, Natasa Jovicic, talked with some 80 history teachers attending the seminar about the preparation of a new Memorial Area collection, which will be launched this year along with an educational centre.
Shari Werb of the US Holocaust Memorial Museum spoke about the use of artefacts in teaching about the Holocaust, while Zdravko Dizdar of the Zagreb Institute of Modern History spoke about the application of the Museum's collection and artefacts in teaching about the Holocaust.
Mara Cvetko and Pava Molnar, who survived the concentration camps of Stara Gradiska and Jasenovac, warned that textbooks insufficiently and inappropriately dealt with the Holocaust, stating that young people should be taught about Nazism and Fascism but in such a way to avoid traumatising them.
The seminar on the Holocaust was organised by the Education, Science and Sports Ministry, the Education Institute, the Culture Ministry, the Jasenovac Memorial Area public institution, the Jewish community from Zagreb, the Israeli Embassy, and a task force for international cooperation in education, remembrance and research.
