Opening the seminar for history teachers, Science, Education and Sports Minister Dragan Primorac said that teaching history today had to have an educational as well as a positive political role, even when it came to sensitive or controversial issues which he said should be taught in such a way to enable students to have access to all available historical facts.
Also present at the seminar were Shulamit Imber of the Israeli Yad Vashem memorial centre, William Meinecke of the American Holocaust Memorial Museum and Wolf Kaiser of the Berlin House of the Wannsee Conference.
The seminar, which will resume in Jasenovac on Friday, was organised by the Croatian Science Ministry, the Education Institute, the Culture Ministry, the "Jasenovac Memorial Area" public institution, the Jewish community in Zagreb, the Israeli Embassy and a task force for international cooperation in education, remembrance and research.
