European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said in his note that Mesic's re-election came at a very important moment when Croatia was expected to start European Union entry talks. He voiced confidence that Mesic's experience and commitment would contribute to a successful continuation of Croatia's relations with the Commission, which he said would continue to fully support Croatia.
Hungarian President Ferenc Madl said in his note that Budapest would advocate a speedy integration of Croatia into the EU and NATO.
Austrian President Heinz Fischer underlined in his note that Austria would support Croatia's admission to the EU as much as it could.
Mesic was congratulated on his victory also by Slovene President Janez Drnovsek, a member of Bosnia's state presidency, Sulejman Tihic, Albanian President Alfred Moisiu, Austrian Prime Minister Wolfgang Schuessel, the chief prosecutor of the Hague war crimes tribunal, Carla del Ponte, and US President George Bush.
Mesic spoke over the phone with EU High Commissioner for the Common Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana.
According to State Election Commission preliminary official figures, Mesic's won 66 percent of the vote in Sunday's polls.
