ZAGREB, Jan 14 (Hina) - The presidential candidate of the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), Jadranka Kosor, said on Friday that those who loved Croatia should vote for her in Sunday's presidential run-off.

"It's time Croatia has a strong, reliable, faithful, consistent and tolerant president of the republic who will enable citizens to lead better lives," said Kosor.

She said Croatia needed a president without prejudices who would not apologise to the aggressor on Croatia in the 1990s or forget who that was, a president who expressed her positions clearly.

"I promise I will show that the president of the republic can be dignified and protect national interests to the benefit of the Croatian people."

She commented on today's radio duel with her opponent, incumbent President Stjepan Mesic. She said Mesic wanted to assure the public that she told lies and quoted him as saying that if God punished lies Kosor would be dead by now. "That brilliant thought on Stjepan Mesic's part shows that he foresees death for citizens who are not to his liking," she said.

Asked about her campaign, Kosor said she had entered it prepared for everything but that she was appalled by and had not expected the amount of dirt that was said. She added that would give politicians an even worse reputation. "I'm doing fine and am optimistic about Sunday," she said.

Commenting on claims from Mesic's election headquarters that the financing of Kosor's campaign was not transparent, campaign leader Ratko Macek said such claims were false insinuations and reiterated that Kosor's campaign was financed solely by her party. He added the HDZ would submit a report on the campaign's cost to the State Election Commission after the elections, and that over five million kuna had been spent so far.

Asked if it was true that the stage at which Kosor held her final rally in downtown Zagreb yesterday was dismantled by Croatian army conscripts, Macek said that was another lie coming from Mesic's headquarters. He added the HDZ had many volunteers and that they did the job.

The First Croatian Policeman association, which gathers officers of Croatia's first police force, today held an assembly at which it made Kosor an honorary member. Kosor said this membership was a big honour and acknowledgement as well as a commitment for the future.

Kosor said that although some analysts claimed she spoke too much about war veterans she would always speak of them because they had made Croatia, the future EU entry and these elections possible.

Recalling the recent display of Chetnik insignia in an eastern village, she said she would never allow such occurrences.

Attending the assembly were also representatives of numerous veterans' associations and Interior Minister Marijan Mlinaric, who said Croatia must not forget its veterans and their legacy.
