The spokesman for the government, Ratko Macek, said Minister Hebrang informed PM Sanader of his condition and that the PM wished him a speedy recovery.
Minister Hebrang on Thursday issued a public statement on his health condition after he underwent surgery abroad, announcing that he would discuss his position in the government with Sanader.
Postoperative tests confirmed the initial diagnosis of prostate adenocarcinoma, Hebrang said, adding that a small part of the cancer had remained in his body, which was why he would have to undergo chemotherapy in the next several months, but his chances of recovery were good. "During that time, I would not be able to work for the government with the intensity required by that position... which is why I will soon discuss my position with Prime Minister Ivo Sanader," the minister said.
Hebrang reiterated his position in an interview for Saturday's issue of the Vecernji List daily saying that he would not be able to perform his duties in the government due to his condition.
"It is my personal decision to offer my resignation for health reasons," Hebrang told the daily, adding that the PM had no other choice but to accept his resignation.
