The Green Dot is a symbol confirming that the package is in accordance with standards applied in 27 European countries. The Green Dot on packaging means that for such packaging a financial contribution has been paid to a qualified national packaging recovery organisation that has been set up in accordance with the principles defined in European Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive 94/62 and the respective national law. Today, self-help-organisations in over 20 countries are using the Green Dot as financing symbol to finance the organisation of the collection, sorting and recovery of used (mainly household) packaging.
Eko Ozra gathers about 80 percent of the producers and importers of the package on the Croatian market.
While taking over the licence on 18 December the association's director, Dragica Bagaric said that this was a step forward in Croatia's efforts to reach European Union standards.
The licence is granted by the umbrella organisation called PRO EUROPE (Packaging Recovery Organisation Europe), whose mission is to "help national recovery organisations to be able to offer the best possible services for lowest sustainable costs to their client companies." according to the PRO EUROPE web site.
PRO EUROPE Director Joachim Quoden said that the system of the Green Dot was launched in Germany in 1990 by the private company "Duales System Deutschland" engaged in management of packaging waste.
